The EU's Debt Crisis and the Long March toward a Federal Budget

The sovereign debt crisis is not confined to the member states of the Eurozone. According to an IMF assessment, governments world-wide will have to borrow more than 11,000 billion dollars from markets in the current year. Of this sum EU member states will need a loan of 1,400 billion dollars yet, compared to the US (4,700 billion dollars) and Japan (3,000 billion dollars): this is a trifling figure. The competition for financial resources waged by the great powers is evidence that a world debt conflict is underway.
